Thinking About Changing Careers? Here’s How to Know When the Time is Right

I had always felt the urge to change careers, to explore something beyond the food industry. Self employed for many years, this work would have me working up and down the UK. During countless hours of commuting, I immersed myself in many things to pass the time from learning Spanish to learning about design.

Repeatedly, I would go to the same podcast themes over and over, sparking a growing curiosity about design thinking , in fact anything design related. The more I learned, the more I realised it was time to take the leap. My plan was to save up, build a financial cushion, and take a few months off to fully dedicate myself to learning and practicing the new skills I’d need for this career shift.

But, as life often reminds us, things rarely go as planned. Instead, I started a new career in design during the unpredictability of lockdown. Purely by accident. Or was luck?

All those countless hours of pondering and planning ended up going completely out the window. The time for change had arrived, and lockdown propelled me down this path. I did not know this was the right time, as it just was the thing I ended up in. Fortunately, I got my first break with an internship in UX, which became the stepping stone to the design work I do today.
